how to use a rototiller

A rototiller can save you hours of backbreaking labor.  They make difficult jobs easy, and really help when you are doing serious gardening or landscaping.  Here are some tips on how to use a rototiller.

  • Safety first.  Keep your feet (and hands) away from the blades at all times.
  • Use the depth gauge to get the depth of tilling that you want.
  • Have a good solid grip on the machine.
  • Let the machine do its work – you are there to guide it.
  • Overlap the tilling spaces by 4 to 6 inches.

The biggest thing to keep in mind when you are using a rototiller is that if you let it do the work and just guide it and keep it where you want it, that is all there is to it.  It is a lot like running a lawnmower.

Here is a great video about how to use a rototiller.

What you can use a rototiller for.

  • Breaking up dirt
  • Creating garden beds
  • Breaking up grass to lay paths
  • Leveling dirt

Rototillers are great for any type of task that normally requires a shovel to move dirt.  You may still have to shovel some dirt around after using one, but it will have done most of the work for you.  This is one garden tool I wouldn’t live without.

They are available online and at home improvement stores for purchase, or you can rent a rototiller at most big home improvement stores.
